In chapter 1, Jonas wonders how he is feeling that day. When he goes home, he eats dinner and his family preforms a feeling ritual. He decides that he is feeling apprehensive because the ceremony of the twelves is coming soon. This ceremony is important because it decides the child's job. When he is at school, his best friend Asher is late and he has to apologize for disrupting the class.
In chapter 2, father tells about a boy that he is taking care of at the nurture center. The boy is not doing very well at sleeping and doing other things and father is worried that they might release the boy. Father admitted that he looked at the naming charts so he could see the boys name and he thought that would help him. the boys name is Gabriel, or as father called him, Gabe.
In Chapter 3, Gabe comes home with father. Father brought him home so he could work with him more so Gabe wouldn't have to be released.
